Curacao is neither an independent state nor a colony: it is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands with its own government, central bank, and currency. From 2025, the island uses the Caribbean guilder XCG, which replaced the Antillean ANG at a one-to-one rate; the peg to the dollar remains unchanged—1.79 per 1 USD. This is the main feature of the corridor: the exchange rate is predictable, and compliance here is Dutch: EU law does not work directly on the island, but the Kingdom of the Netherlands extends measures similar to European ones to Curacao through its sanctions legislation. ATM24's manager coordinates the recipient bank on the island before sending: a payment returned due to compliance issues costs more than waiting for a check.

Curacao's Payment Ecosystem

The route, the receiving bank and the payout amount are agreed before payment.

The national currency is the Caribbean guilder (XCG), which from March 31, 2025, replaced the Antillean guilder (ANG) at a 1:1 ratio and is used jointly by Curacao and Sint Maarten. The peg to the US dollar is maintained at 1 USD = 1.79 XCG. Curacao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located off the coast of Venezuela; it is not part of the EU but has the status of an overseas territory, so the banking sector operates under strict compliance standards. EU sanctions regulations do not apply directly on the island, but measures against Russia are implemented through the legislation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, including the Sanctiewet, so the recipient bank and route must be checked in advance. The regulator is the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten (CBCS), located in Willemstad. The IBAN format does not apply in Curacao: for international SWIFT transfers, the bank's SWIFT/BIC, internal account number, and recipient's full name are used. The main bank is Maduro & Curiel's Bank (MCB), the largest bank on the island with a wide network of branches.

Local details and transfer conditions

The US dollar is widely accepted on par with XCG, though change is often given in Caribbean guilders. The official languages are Dutch, Papiamento, and English; Spanish is also widely used. Banks typically operate Monday through Friday from approximately 08:00 to 16:00 local time (UTC−4); Willemstad is 7 hours behind Moscow. ATM24 checks the available route in advance before confirming the application. International SWIFT transfers take 2–5 business days. ATM24 commission is from 0.9%.

How to get Caribbean guilders XCG in Curacao

Pick the way that suits the recipient — we agree the route and the details before payment

To a Maduro & Curiel's Bank or Banco di Caribe card in XCG

Bank cards in Curacao accept both guilders and dollars—the currency deposited depends on the currency in which the account linked to the card is held. Maduro & Curiel's Bank (MCB), Banco di Caribe, Orco Bank, RBC Royal Bank. Recipient's full name in Latin characters and 16-digit card number. Some accounts on the island are held in dollars: confirm with the recipient whether XCG or USD is on the card

  • MCB
  • RBC Royal Bank
  • Orco Bank

To a bank account in Curacao (XCG or USD)

The island does not issue IBAN: the bank is identified by SWIFT code, and the account by the bank's internal number. You need the bank's SWIFT code, account number, and recipient's full name in Latin characters. Account currency is confirmed in advance: both guilder and dollar accounts are common in Curacao. Oversight here follows the Dutch model, not the Caribbean one: documents about the origin of funds are requested on the island more often than would be expected from an offshore jurisdiction

  • MCB
  • RBC Royal Bank
  • Orco Bank

Cash in Willemstad and major cities in Curacao

Cash withdrawal on the island: Willemstad is the administrative and business center of Curacao. Willemstad is the capital of the island, a historic center listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. US dollars are in common circulation alongside guilders, and change is often given in XCG. The island is small, and cash withdrawal options are limited: the availability of the amount is checked before confirming the application

  • Willemstad
  • Groot Kwartier
  • Santa Maria

To transfer money to Curacao, you need the recipient bank's SWIFT code, account number, and full name in Latin characters—the island does not issue IBAN. The Caribbean guilder XCG is pegged to the dollar at 1.79, so the amount is calculated predictably. Keep in mind the sanctions regime: EU law does not apply directly on the island, but the Kingdom of the Netherlands enforces similar measures on Curacao through its own legislation. Confirm the recipient's account currency with them—both guilder and dollar accounts are common on the island. The passability of the selected bank is checked before confirming the application—on the island, this determines the outcome of the payment more than the transfer amount.

Google

Initially I found the service in Google search through an ad banner. I went to read reviews on Yandex and Google, saw that on the maps there is only 1 point in Phuket and it's some kind of ATM. And the reviews are all 5 stars. There are photos, instructions, a website and everything seems to look nice, but it seems that making a website isn’t that hard, reviews can be bought along with photos. I decided to check it myself anyway (because I needed baht and the only thing to exchange was rubles on a card from a Russian bank). I checked, exchanged 5000 baht and everything works smoothly, maybe I'll use them again during my trip, since this time was a test for me. Special thanks to manager Stanislav for the help (I learned the manager’s name in the messenger after the exchange was completed). Upd: exchanged a second time for a larger amount, everything also went smoothly and at a rate not very different from the bank rate.
