Hong Kong is part of China, but HKD and yuan are different money

After the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, many expected a gradual transition to the yuan (CNY). This did not happen: Hong Kong retained its status as a Special Administrative Region with a separate financial system and separate currency. HKD and CNY are two different means of payment with different rates and different regulatory mechanisms. The USD/CNY rate is floating, depending on People's Bank of China policy and trade balance; the USD/HKD rate is strictly fixed within a corridor. In Hong Kong, prices are listed in HKD, not yuan. Some shops accept yuan as a concession to mainland tourists, but the official currency of Hong Kong remains only HKD. For a traveler from Russia this is important: yuan in your pocket will not substitute for the Hong Kong dollar.

Russian cards don't work in Hong Kong: how not to be left without cash

Visa and Mastercard issued by Russian banks are not accepted in Hong Kong - due to sanctions restrictions since 2022. You cannot withdraw HKD from an ATM with them, nor pay in stores. UnionPay cards from Russian banks are accepted more often, but not everywhere: large retail chains work with them, while small establishments and street exchangers do not.
