Short answer

You have found a bank that supports SWIFT and obtained the details of an overseas account. Before sending money, check the specific payment route: the country, currency, amount, purpose and parties involved. For SWIFT transfers from Russian banks, having a code is only a starting point.

Gather the transaction details, request the terms from the sending bank and check whether the receiving bank will accept the transfer. Clarify correspondent banking instructions, documents and costs. Preliminary responses help you prepare the payment but do not guarantee that the funds will be credited.

Mark the stage you have reached in your checks.

Why does a Russian bank's SWIFT code not confirm that a payment is available?

BIC stands for Business Identifier Code, a code used to identify an organization. When used for a bank, it is referred to as a bank identifier code. However, an international BIC and a Russian BIK are different banking details.

On its Business Identifier Code (BIC) page, SWIFT distinguishes between codes for organizations with and without network access. An entry in the directory therefore does not, by itself, confirm connectivity.

SWIFT is a financial messaging system. Connectivity allows organizations to exchange messages, but participants establish their relationships separately. The BIC: frequently asked questions explicitly explains that having a BIC does not entitle an organization to send or receive messages over the network.

When checking whether a SWIFT transfer from a Russian bank is possible, distinguish between the code, access to the system and the payment terms. Even confirmed connectivity does not tell you whether the banks will accept your transaction.

  1. BIC found

  2. Network access checked

  3. Participants' terms clarified

  4. Payment details agreed

The diagram shows the sequence of checks. Each subsequent stage requires a separate response; it does not describe how the money moves.

How can you check whether a bank in Russia can handle your SWIFT transfer?

Start by describing the transaction. It is easier to establish whether a Russian bank can process your SWIFT transfer when you know the country, receiving bank, amount, transfer currency and purpose. Specify who is sending the money and who is receiving it: an individual, sole proprietor or company. State separately if you are transferring money to your own account.

First, gather the details of your payment
  1. Gather the payment details

Prepare information about the parties involved and the recipient. If you are paying for tuition, accommodation or a supply of goods, have the invoice or contract ready. Ask the bank which documents are required for your specific transaction.

  2. Check the official terms

Find the section for your customer category. Distinguish between incoming and outgoing transactions, and between domestic and international transfers. Check whether the bank accepts these payment instructions from new customers before opening an account and buying foreign currency.

  3. Submit an inquiry through an official channel

Provide the payment details. Ask whether you need a foreign currency account and which currency control requirements apply to the transaction. Clarify whether you can submit the payment instruction through the mobile app or need to use another channel.

  4. Save the response and terms

Keep the correspondence, the response date and the documents the bank refers to. Check that the response applies to your customer category, country, currency and payment purpose. Terms for a company cannot automatically be applied to an individual.

For example, the page on Raiffeisenbank's foreign currency transfers for individuals describes incoming and outgoing transactions separately. This shows why a general service heading needs to be read alongside the terms for the transaction you need.

Sample inquiry to a bank

I am sending money as an individual to my own account at an overseas bank. What information do you need to check whether a transfer in my chosen currency is available?

Include the details you have gathered with your question. A general response that "foreign currency transfers are available" leaves the question of your payment unanswered.

What should you ask the receiving bank about currency and correspondent banks?

Ask the recipient to contact their bank with the name of the Russian sending bank, the currency, amount and payment purpose. The question "Do you accept money from Russia?" provides a starting point for the checks, but the parties involved still need to be clarified.

Clarify the terms with both banks

Find out whether the account can receive this type of payment. If the account currency differs from the transfer currency, request the terms for crediting the funds and any conversion. The recipient should clarify what information the bank will request before providing a preliminary response.

Ask the receiving bank

Do you accept transfers from the specified Russian bank in the chosen currency? What correspondent banking instructions should be passed on to the sender?

Ask the sending bank

Can you use the receiving bank's instructions for this transaction? What information do you need to check the proposed route?

Ask both banks

What other documents and explanations are needed? Which questions remain open before the payment instruction is submitted?

Pass the foreign bank's instructions to the sending bank in full. You should not choose an intermediary bank or correspondent account yourself from a third-party directory. Ask the sending bank to confirm that the proposed instructions are suitable for your payment.

If the full chain is not known in advance, record this in the correspondence. Clarify which participants are known, what the bank can check before sending and what information will become available after the payment instruction is accepted. The response "the recipient has a correspondent bank" does not yet connect all parts of the route.

This cross-check is consistent with SWIFT's explanation: connected organizations check their counterparties and establish relationships for exchanging messages. The terms of a specific bank transfer need to be clarified with its participants.

What costs and terms should you clarify before sending money?

Ask about costs at each stage. The sending bank's fee does not tell you how much money the recipient will receive. Separately clarify other participants' charges, currency conversion and the receiving bank's terms.

This is a list of questions, not a schedule of bank or ATM24 fees.

Which responses to save before making a transfer
What to clarifyWho to askWhat response to save
Sending bank's feeThe sending bankThe fee for your transaction and how it is charged
Other participants' chargesBoth banksWhat is known in advance and what may be deducted from the transfer
Conversion rateThe bank converting the currencyWhen the rate is set and which amount it is applied to

Terms if further information is requestedBoth banksHow to submit documents, amend the payment instruction and request a status update; what charges may apply

Ask what timeframe the bank gives as an estimate and whether the service terms include a guaranteed timeframe. Separately clarify the procedure if an additional document is requested or the transfer is returned. If some costs are unknown in advance, save this explanation along with the fee schedule.

How should you recheck a payment after news that a bank has been disconnected from SWIFT?

If you have read that a bank has been disconnected from SWIFT, find the original announcement. Check the date, the organization's exact legal name, the authority that made the decision and the date the measure takes effect. News about a group of companies requires you to clarify which legal entity is affected.

Next, establish what has changed. Access to financial messages, transaction restrictions and asset freezes address different issues. In Swift and sanctions, SWIFT explains its role: competent authorities make sanctions decisions, and the service complies with applicable requirements.

Check exactly what has changed: access to messages, transaction terms or the rules of a specific bank.

For a specific explanation concerning the United States, see OFAC FAQ No. 51. Under the rules administered by OFAC, US financial institutions must freeze certain assets under their control. OFAC itself does not hold this money. This explanation cannot be applied to every payment suspension.

If you are checking Sberbank, VTB or Alfa-Bank, compare the official announcement with your specific transaction. A Russian bank's absence from one list does not confirm the entire route. Request a fresh response for your currency, recipient and payment purpose, even if you have sent this type of payment before.

What should you ask ATM24 if the bank transfer terms do not suit you?

To discuss sending money abroad through ATM24, provide a manager with the transaction details. You can submit a request on the website: a manager helps you choose a method and agree on the terms before the transaction. The exchange rate is confirmed at the time of the request.

What to tell the manager

Destination
Recipient's country and bank
Transaction
Amount, currency and purpose
Parties involved
Who is sending and who is receiving
Receipt
Required format

You can submit a request to discuss the terms on the international transfers via SWIFT service page. Ask the manager about the fee, timeframe and suitable method for your payment.

If you are considering an alternative payment channel involving a payment agent, clarify the agent's role and the parties involved in the payment. Agree on any different currency or format with the recipient first.

How can you assess your payment using a tuition payment as an example?

Illustrative scenario: a parent in Russia has received a tuition invoice in euros from an overseas educational institution. The invoice specifies the recipient and bank details. The banks have not yet responded regarding the route.

A man takes notes on paper while sitting on a sofa next to a woman with a tablet
A tuition invoice sets out the payment details but does not confirm the route
  1. You have an invoice - the purpose and recipient are known

The parent can describe the payment purpose and provide the bank with information about the educational institution. The invoice helps explain the transaction but does not, by itself, confirm that a transfer from Russia is possible.

Conclusion: the initial information for an inquiry is ready. The availability of the route still needs to be established.

  2. You have general information from the bank - a response for your customer category is needed

The parent finds a description of international transfers on the service page. To make a decision, they need to ask separately whether the bank accepts an individual's instruction to pay tuition in euros to this recipient.

Conclusion: the service description provides a basis for the question. A response on the terms of this transaction is needed before buying foreign currency.

  3. You have received instructions - they need to be agreed with the sending bank

Suppose the educational institution has provided its bank's instructions. The parent forwards them to the sending bank and asks whether they can be used for the payment. No bank response is assumed in this illustrative example.

Conclusion: the recipient's instructions need to be checked by the sending bank.

  4. A question about intermediaries remains - the route needs clarification

If the information gathered does not make it clear how correspondent banks will be involved, the checks are not yet complete. The parent asks the bank to explain what is known in advance and whether it can accept a payment instruction using these instructions.

Conclusion: the missing response about the route needs to be requested before sending money.

If the currency, recipient or instructions change by the time a response arrives, they will need to be agreed again. The transfer outcome, costs and timeframe are not specified in this illustrative scenario.

What should you check again before sending?

Compare the banks' responses with the current payment instruction details. The bank details, country, currency, amount, purpose and parties involved must match the information on which the responses were based.

Response received

The banks have reviewed the payment details. The document requirements, known costs and procedure for requesting a status update are clear.

Clarification needed

The response is general or incomplete. Questions remain about correspondent banks, the amount to be credited, documents or charges if the transfer is returned.

Terms have changed

The currency, amount, parties involved or instructions have changed. A new inquiry with current information is needed.

The risk to your plan is specific: a document request may require further action, while a returned transfer may mean revising your payment method and costs. Preliminary agreement does not confirm that the funds have actually been credited. If the details have changed, request updated terms.

Questions and answers

The bank has a SWIFT code. Can I send money now?

The code identifies the organization and does not, by itself, confirm network access or the ability to make a payment. Give the bank the transaction details and request the terms for your customer category, currency and recipient.

The app has a foreign currency transfer section. Does that mean my transfer is available?

The presence of this section does not confirm that a payment instruction with your purpose and recipient will be accepted. Clarify whether the specific transaction is available through the app and which documents you need to provide before submitting the instruction.

The receiving bank accepts money from Russia but does not name all the intermediaries. How should I continue the checks?

Ask it to check whether it can accept a transfer from the specific sending bank in the required currency and provide instructions. Then ask the sending bank whether it can use them, which participants are known in advance and what remains unresolved.

Can I replace dollars or euros with yuan, tenge or Turkish lira and keep the previous agreements?

The new currency must be agreed with the recipient and both banks: the previous response does not cover it. The procedure is the same for Europe and the United States, the Middle East and CIS countries, but each destination is checked separately; Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan also require separate inquiries.

The payment has already been accepted, but additional documents have been requested. What should I do?

Use the bank's official channel to clarify what is being requested, how to submit the documents and the reference number for the inquiry. Ask how to obtain status updates after responding; acceptance of the documents does not, by itself, confirm the date the funds will be credited.

The bank has approved the route. Does this guarantee that the money will arrive by the required date?

A preliminary response must be distinguished from the service terms and the actual arrival of funds in the account. If the payment deadline is mandatory, agree with the recipient in advance on what will serve as proof of payment and what to do if receipt of the funds has not yet been confirmed by that date.
